Two Sacramento Bee newspaper carriers were fired upon as they made their deliveries in Meadowview this morning, according to authorities.
About 3:45 a.m. one carrier was driving in the 7600 block of Detroit Boulevard while the other delivery person, who had a bandana on his face to ward off the cold, was hanging from the vehicle and tossing papers, Sacramento police said.
As the carriers went about their job, they began to pass a black Lexus IS 300 with blue neon headlights and yellow fog lights. At that point, the man in the Lexus began firing at the carriers.
The paper deliverers were not hit by the gunfire but bullets did strike two homes.
Dan Schaub, senior vice president for audience development and membership services at The Bee, said both carriers are alright, adding that they even finished their deliveries after the incident.
He said newspaper carriers often encounter challenging situations during the course of their work, sometimes intervening or calling for help when they come across home fires or crimes in progress.
"Sometimes, they become heroes," Shaub said. He added, however, that "there are times like this that are not as fortunate."
