Anthony James Karas (pictured), 47, was taken into custody and booked into the Placer County Jail on suspicion of grand theft and possession of stolen property, according to a Placer County Sheriff's Department news release.
The California Registered Historical Landmark plaque was reported stolen in January. It had been found at Lozanos and Bald Hill roads. Sheriff's detectives said it was valued at $951.
Last week, deputies found the sawed-up marker (pictured) dumped along Fiddyment Road and were able to trace it back to Karas, officials said. The marker had been cut into many pieces and all of the writing was ground from the solid brass piece.
