Police shot and killed a man suspected of gunning down three women - two of them fatally - inside a Yuba City home this afternoon.
About 4:15 p.m., Yuba City police received reports of gunshots in the 600 block of B Street, an older residential neighborhood in the city's central area.
Responding officers saw a male suspect fleeing the house with a handgun, said Shawna Pavey, Yuba City police spokeswoman. They pursued him for more than six blocks to the area of Franklin Avenue and Pine Way, where officers shot the suspect. He was pronounced dead at the scene, she said.
The circumstances of the shooting are still under investigation, she said.
At the house, officers found the bodies of two middle-aged women who had died of gunshot wounds. Another woman wounded by gunfire was transported to Rideout Memorial Hospital in Marysville, where she was undergoing surgery tonight.
Police have not yet identified the suspected gunman or victims.
The motive for the shootings and relationship between the suspect and victims remained unclear, Pavey said
"There were no indications of any gang connections," she said. "We're anxious to learn what the details were -- why he went into residence, how he knew those women."
