The Sacramento County coroner's office today released the name of the suspected bank robber shot by Citrus Heights police.
He was identified as Jeffrey James Gonzales, 51, of Citrus Heights.
Police said that Gonzalez claimed to have an explosive device when he held up the bank Wednesday afternoon.
Police said that at about 4:15 p.m., police received a call of a crime in progress at Union Bank, 5748 Sunrise Blvd. The robber claimed to have a gun and an explosive device.
Officers surrounded the bank before the man came out of the building. Feeling threatened, police fired at the man, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
Because of the report of an explosive device, police cleared the area and called in the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department bomb squad. After 7 p.m., it was determined there wasn't an explosive device at the bank.
Police then began processing the scene and interviewing bank employees and customers.
