Driver critically injured when car hits tree in Citrus Heights

A driver was critically injured this afternoon after the vehicle he was driving slammed into a tree on Madison Avenue near Sunrise Boulevard.

Citrus Heights police officers were called to the 7000 block of westbound Madison Avenue about 1 p.m. regarding a single-vehicle crash. They found a red Acura Integra coupe with serious damage. The driver, a man in his 20s, was the sole occupant. Officers found him unconscious but breathing, according to a Police Department news release.

Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District firefighters had to use heavy pry tools to remove the driver from the vehicle, police said. The man was taken to a local hospital in critical condition.

Police said witnesses who observed the vehicle just before the crash reported that it was being driven recklessly, weaving in and out of traffic at speeds in excess of 75 mph. Police said they do not know whether drugs or alcohol played a role.

Anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to call the Citrus Heights Police Department, (916) 727-5500.
