Motorist dies in crash into tree in Rocklin area

A resident of Cool died last night when his car ran off the road and hit a tree along Interstate 80 in Placer County.

Robert H. Atteberry, 66, was driving his sport utility vehicle westbound on I-80 near Rocklin Road about 8 p.m. when for unknown reasons his SUV swerved to the right, according to a press release from the California Highway Patrol.

His SUV then hit a large oak tree along the highway. Atteberry, who was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, died at the scene.
