A Sacramento Superior Court jury today convicted two reputed street gang members of second-degree murder in the Oct. 24, 2009, shooting death of a 22-year man outside a now-shuttered North Natomas night club that used to be owned by the Kings' Chris Webber.
The verdicts were returned against Nicholas Leathel Newsome, 23, and Sean Lekeith Joyner, also 23, for the death of David Blanks after a rap show at Webber's former club, Center Court.
Witnesses said Blanks was leaving the club with a group of friends when they were confronted by an estimated 10 reputed gang members. After an exchange of words, somebody in the defendants' group shot and killed Blanks.
Jurors, however, did not identify either Newsome or Joyner as the gunman. Both are still subject to significant sentencing enhancements for being in the group where a the discharge of a firearm resulted in death.
Judge Ernest W. Sawtelle scheduled the defendants' sentencing for April 27.
