A man found dead Wednesday in the Land Park area has been identified by the Sacramento County Coroner's Office as Joseph Knowles, 61, of Sacramento.
The Coroner's Office on Thursday sought the public's help in identifying the man, who had no identification on him.
Police and paramedics responded after a passerby found the body along the railroad tracks west of San Mateo Way and San Mateo Court. He was declared dead a 5:32 p.m. Wednesday. Officials said he may have collapsed several hours or a day before he was found.
The cause of death is pending, but the Coroner's Office reported no evidence of trauma or foul play. Based on Knowles' attire, officials said they believe he was jogging or walking prior to his death. They said he had ear buds and an MP3 player with him and was holding a small canister of pepper spray.
"The Coroner's Office extends our deepest sympathies and condolences to Joseph Knowles' family," Coroner Greg Wyatt said in a written statement. "We also thank the public and media outlets who heeded the call to assist us in identifying Mr. Knowles."
Wyatt reminds people to carry easily accessible identification when engaged in outdoor activities, including walking, jogging and bicycling.
