Davis police arrest 51, issue 100 citations at Picnic Day

By Anita Creamer

Davis police officials say they arrested 51 people and wrote at least 100 citations at the 2012 Picnic Day over the weekend.

Picnic Day is the university's annual spring open house, but in the past several years, it has degenerated into public drunkenness and mayhem and caused strains between the campus and the community.

At last year's Picnic Day, in contrast, the Davis Police Department and other agencies made 54 arrests and wrote 221 tickets, most for alcohol-related violations, and the UC Davis police made another 10 arrests. Last year as well, a UC Davis graduate was killed at a Picnic Day party off campus when he fell and hit his head.
