For the second time this year, the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department has been called upon to handle emergency calls in the delta town of Isleton.
The Isleton interim city manager called the sheriff's department at 7 p.m. Thursday to report that the police force was no longer functioning. Media reports say that the Isleton police chief has been placed on leave.
Sheriff Scott Jones authorized deputies to respond to "priority one" calls in Isleton. Deputies will only handle calls for service if there is a life-threatening or critical emergency.
All other calls will be referred to Isleton City Hall.
For about a week in January, the sheriff's department handled law enforcement duties in the town of 850 residents because of a lapse in the city's workers' compensation coverage.
Eventually, those responsibilities were handed back to the Police Department after the matter of workers' compensation coverage had been rectified.
