Daniel Graf (pictured) met his estranged wife in the Walmart parking lot at 7010 Auburn Blvd. shortly before 9 p.m. Friday. They met so that he could visit their 3-month-old infant, but during the visit the couple argued over child custody arrangements and Graf's wife called police, according to a Citrus Heights Police Department news release.
When officers arrived, they began to speak with Graf as he held the infant in his arms. During the conversation, Graf became angry and told the officers that he was going to kill the child, officials said. He allegedly began to choke the infant with his hands.
Believing the child was in grave danger, an officer used a department-approved carotid restraint control hold, which rendered Graf unconscious so that he released his hold on the child, police said.
The infant was taken to a hospital for medical treatment and is expected to recover.
Graf was arrested on suspicion of attempted homicide and causing a child to suffer physical pain, and for an outstanding warrant. He was taken to a hospital where he was medically cleared and then booked into Sacramento County Jail.
