Two-alarm fire displaces families at Citrus Heights complex

A two-alarm fire this evening displaced 10 families in a Citrus Heights apartment complex.

No one was injured but the blaze caused significant damage to 10 units in the Edgewater Apartments on Sunrise Vista Drive, said Assistant Chief Scott Cockrum of the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire Department.

The department arrived about 7 p.m. and had the fire put out in about 30 minutes, he said. A creek running behind the complex prevented the department from accessing the rear part of the building, where the fire started, he said.

Sixty firefighters responded to the blaze. An investigator arrived about 8:30 p.m. and was still trying to determine the cause of the fire, which originated on a second-floor deck, Cockrum said.

The American Red Cross is on the scene to help displaced families in need of shelter.
