A man suspected of killing his brother Monday night has been arrested - but not for homicide.
Robert Manuel Steward, 34, was booked into Sacramento County Jail on suspicion of being an ex-felon in possession of a gun. Deputies believe he shot his brother, whose name had not been released.
A sheriff's spokesman said detectives will finish their reports before submitting them to the Sacramento County District Attorney's office. The district attorney's office will determine whether Steward will be charged with his brother's death.
Deputies were called to the 2500 block of Warrego Way, near Watt Avenue and Highway 50, regarding a fight between two men about 4:30 p.m. Monday. The caller said a neighbor came to his house and asked him to call police because his brother had assaulted him.
When deputies arrived, Steward was waiting outside, according to a sheriff's department press release. Deputies detained him and went inside where they found his brother dead from a gunshot to his upper body.
A handgun was found near the body.
Steward was then taken away to be interviewed by detectives. He was booked into jail at 2:40 a.m. today and his bail set at $265,000.
