Woman injured, dogs perish in Carmichael house fire

A woman suffered minor injuries trying to save her two small dogs from a fire that spread from the garage to the living quarters of a Carmichael home this evening.

Assistant Fire Chief Walt White said Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District crews were called to 2800 block of La Colina Way at 6:35 p.m. and arrived to find the home's garage burning.

He said a man and woman were at the house when the fire started. The man was outside barbecuing and the woman was inside the home. The woman discovered the fire when she opened the door from the house to the garage.

Two small dogs were in the house, and the woman suffered minor injuries from smoke and heat as she sought unsuccessfully to find the animals. Firefighters later found the dogs and reported that they did not survive.

The woman was taken to UC Davis Medical Center for medical evaluation.

White said the fire destroyed the garage and caused extensive damage to the interior of the house. Radiant heat damage also was reported to the outside of a neighboring house.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
