QUESTION: What happened to the people who were involved in the shooting death of Deantwan Thomas in 2005 in the Meadowview area?
Submitted by: Jessica M., Sacramento
ANSWER: Deantwon Torreal Thomas, a 17-year-old Burbank High School student, was shot and killed March 11, 2005 as he and a friend were walking home.
According to stories in The Bee, Thomas and his friend were confronted about 10:45 p.m. by three males in the 2300 block of Kenworthy Way in the Meadowview area. A few minutes later, one of the three began shooting, hitting Thomas in the neck. Thomas died on the street, and his friend suffered a minor gunshot wound.
Two juveniles, also students at Luther Burbank High, were arrested in the case March 14. Their names were not released because of their age. A homicide warrant was issued for a third suspect, John Manyfield, 18, about a week after the shooting.
Investigators learned that Manyfield was going to Burke County, Ga., to visit relatives and notified an FBI task force there.
In early April 2005, agents saw Manyfield leaving a family member's house and stopped him. A struggle ensued between Manyfield and the agents, and Manyfield was shot by one agent as he tried to take another agent's weapon, according to reports.
Manyfield was taken to an area hospital where he died of his injuries.
