This evening is National Night Out, an annual event in which neighbors have some fun and send a serious message.
In neighborhoods across the country, there will be gatherings to mark the 29th annual National Night Out event.
National Night Out is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness, boost neighborhood spirit and send a message to would-be criminals that neighbors are standing together to fight crime.
During the event, participating communities organize a variety of activities for the evening.
In more than 70 neighborhoods throughout Sacramento, block parties, barbecues and ice cream socials are planned. The gatherings provide an opportunity to renew friendships with neighbors, pledge to keep an eye on each other's homes and maybe get rid of way too many zucchini.
In Sacramento, police officers and city officials will be visiting some of the neighborhoods participating in the event. In Natomas, at Witter Ranch, 2295 Saintsbury Drive, the big Night Out event features food vendors, a bounce house and games from 5 to 8 p.m.
In West Sacramento, 17 gatherings are planned, including one at the corner of Aster Avenue and Manchester Street. For more information call (916) 617-4937.
