A garage fire was responsible for a column of dark smoke in Carmichael this afternoon.
Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District crews responded to a report of a structure fire in the 6200 block of Samoa Way in Carmichael at 3:45 p.m. They arrived to find a fire in the garage of a single-story home.
Two men at the home reported smelling smoke. When they opened the door from the house to the garage, they discovered the fire, according to a Fire District news release. They were able to get out of the house unharmed before firefighters arrived.
The fire was largely confined to the garage with only minor extension into the attic and interior of the house, although fire officials reported extensive smoke damage throughout the residence. Minor heat damage to the exterior of a neighboring house also was reported.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Fire officials remind residents to quickly exit their home if they discover a fire and call 911 once their are outside. If possible, people also are advised to close doors between the fire and other parts of the house to reduce fire damage.
