A Sacramento Superior Court jury today convicted three men of second-degree murder in the Jan. 19, 2011, shooting death of Deandre James Ellison in the driveway of his Del Paso Heights home.
The verdicts were returned against the two gunmen, Adam Michael Cornejo, 18, and Isaac Thomas Vasquez, 17, and the driver of their vehicle, Jesse Juan Cornejo, 23.
Jurors found that the killing was aimed for the benefit of the three defendants' Norteno street gang. Besides the murder of the 20-year-old Ellison, the three defendants were each convicted on four counts of attempted murder of the passengers in Ellison's car and one count of shooting into an inhabited dwelling. The older Cornejo brother also was convicted of felony evasion for speeding away and hitting five cars before crashing on Natomas Boulevard.
Authorities said the shooting apparently was set off by hard looks that were exchanged between the defendants and victims.
Judge Cheryl Chun Meegan scheduled the sentencing on the four defendants for Sept. 14.
