Update: Neighbor heard shots, screams in Arden Arcade killing

Sacramento Sheriff's Department deputies are questioning several people in an effort to find a suspect in the shooting death of a man last night at an Arden Arcade apartment house.

The search this morning at the Somerset Apartments, 2526 Edison Ave., had not resulted in any arrests. The apartment house was evacuated this morning while a search for suspects and evidence was conducted.

Last night, Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies arrived at the apartment house about 10:45 p.m. to find a man dying in the street in the 2500 block of Edison Avenue near Fulton Avenue and the Capital City freeway. He was transported to a hospital, where he died.

According to the department, a dispute between several men in the parking lot outside the apartments preceded the violence, but deputies were unsure of the nature of the dispute.

Residents of the complex said the victim, described by the sheriff's department as a 25-year-old man, lived in an apartment there and was often seen scavenging for cans and bottles in the area.

Island Bramlett, a resident, said arguments, violence, and occasional gunfire are common in the neighborhood. "It's always crowded out here at night," he said. "Especially these warm summer nights--these youngsters are out."

When he heard two shots last night, he ignored them at first. Then, he said, "When I heard that lady scream, I knew something had happened."

He came outside to see the victim flailing on the ground where the apartment complex's driveway meets Edison Avenue. Bystanders were trying to help the man, and paramedics arrived soon afterward.

The 25-year-old man, who had suffered a gunshot wound to his upper body, was transported to a hospital where he died from his injury. His name has not been released, pending notification of family.

Deputies said an argument between several men in the apartment parking lot preceded the gunfire that took the man's life. Investigators believe that the wounded man was shot while in the parking lot and then made his way to the street where he was tended to by several people before deputies and paramedics arrived.

The nature of the dispute in the parking lot was not immediately known, according to a sheriff's department press release.

Anyone with information is asked to call homicide detectives at (916) 874-5115. Tipsters may also call Crime Alert at (916) 443-4357. Callers to Crime Alert may remain anonymous and may be eligible for a reward up to $1,000.
