A woman has died following a head-on collision early this afternoon on Jackson Road, south of Mather Airport.
Officer Jasper Begay of the California Highway Patrol said the collision occurred about 12:25 p.m. A woman driving a Toyota Camry was westbound on Jackson Road just west of Excelsior Road when she began weaving in and out of the opposing traffic lane, he said. She then veered left, colliding head-on with an eastbound Chevy Silverado pickup truck.
Begay said the driver of the pickup swerved onto the shoulder but was unable to avoid the collision. An eastbound Dodge Ram truck traveling behind the Silverado, was unable to stop and struck the rear of the pickup.
Begay said the Camry bounced off the Silverado and ended up on the right shoulder, blocking the westbound lane. The driver of the Camry, reported to be in her early 30s, was trapped and had to be extricated from the vehicle, Begay said. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Her name has not been released pending notification of family.
The driver of the Silverado was taken by ambulance to an area hospital with moderate to major injuries, Begay said. The driver of the Dodge Ram was not injured.
Begay said it is not known why the driver of the Camry was weaving, and the cause of the collision is under investigation.
A section of Jackson Road was closed to traffic in both directions until about 2:30 p.m.
