Update: Fatal accident causes closure of westbound Highway 12 near Lodi for several hours

A pick-up truck driving eastbound along Highway 12 near Lodi was involved in a head-on collision with a big rig traveling westbound today around 6 a.m., said California Highway Patrol Officer Angel Arceo.

A second collision involving three vehicles followed about seven minutes later, according to a CHP report.

Witness statements say the pick-up was swerving back and forth along the highway before crashing. Arceo said CHP officers have no suspicion of drugs or alcohol.

The driver of the pick-up truck has been confirmed dead due to the crash, with the driver of the big rig suffering minor injuries, Arceo said. He said the second crash had no injuries and resulted from drivers trying to avoid the first crash.

The crash has closed all westbound lanes of Highway 12 with an estimated clearing time of "at least five hours," according to the report.
