A family outing on Lake Tahoe left a 7-year-old girl with severe leg injuries today when her mother and father, each driving a personal watercraft at roughly 30 mph, accidentally collided on the lake, the South Lake Tahoe Police Department said.
The girl was flown to Reno for treatment of the injuries to her leg and foot. Her mother and 5-year-old brother were taken to Barton Hospital in South Lake Tahoe with moderate head and leg injuries. The father was relatively unhurt.
According to police, Sufian and Subia Kazmi of San Jose had rented the water craft Monday morning, and each took one of their children seated behind them out on the lake. Everyone in the family was wearing lifejackets.
After about 30 minutes, the mother's craft crossed in front of the father's craft and it struck the mother's craft broadside, police said. The children were ejected from the watercraft but they were rescued by personnel at the Timbercove Marina, where the accident occurred shortly before 9:45 a.m.
No one in the family is believed to have suffered life-threatening injuries, police said. The investigation is continuing and no citations have been issued.
