Man receives 36-years-to-life prison sentence for 1992 murder

A man convicted of a 1992 murder in Sacramento has been sentenced to 36 years to life in prison.

A Sacramento County jury in August convicted Michael Peterson, 47, of first-degree murder in the stabbing death of John Arana. He was sentenced today by Sacramento Superior Court Judge Maryanne Gilliard, according to a news release from the Sacramento County District Attorney's Office.

Arana, 40, died of stab wounds Nov. 5, 1992, at his home in the 5400 block of 10th Avenue. A few days after his death, his stolen truck was found about a mile from his home.

No progress was made in the case, but a review of evidence from the homicide resulted in development of a DNA profile in 2003.

In 2009, cold case detectives learned that a DNA match had been made with Peterson and the Arana case. Peterson had been convicted and sent to prison in Missouri, causing his DNA profile to be entered into a database.

Peterson had an extensive criminal history in California and Missouri and was on parole at the time of the Arana killing.

Peterson was extradited from Missouri and returned to Sacramento in January 2010.
