A man was killed and two women were injured this afternoon in a collision between a school bus and a sport-utility vehicle near Rancho Cordova.
California Highway Patrol Officer Jasper Begay said the crash occurred at 3:50 p.m. A 1996 Jeep Cherokee was westbound on Jackson Highway when the driver ran a red light at Sunrise Boulevard, Begay said. An Elk Grove Unified School District bus traveling southbound on Sunrise, with only the driver on board, struck the passenger side of the Jeep.
Begay said the male passenger in the Jeep died at the scene. His name was not released pending notification of family.
The Jeep's driver, a 50-year-old woman, was taken to a hospital with moderate to major injuries, and the bus driver was taken to a hospital with minor to moderate injuries, Begay said.
The accident remains under investigation, but Begay said the he expects the driver of the Jeep to be arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.
The intersection of Jackson and Sunrise was closed to traffic for about two hours.
