A pedestrian was struck an killed tonight by a West Sacramento police vehicle en route to assist in the pursuit of a stolen vehicle.
Police spokesman Lt. Tod Sockman said an officer pursuing a stolen vehicle about 8:30 p.m. called for assistance. A second unit responding to the call to join in the pursuit struck a male pedestrian at Pine Street and West Capitol Avenue.
Sockman said the first officer abandoned the pursuit to assist at the accident scene, and the stolen vehicle subsequently crashed into a parked car in the 1900 block of Maryland Avenue.
The driver of the stolen vehicle, later identified as a 17-year-old male, ran from the scene and the owner of the parked vehicle gave chase, jumping over a couple of fences, before catching and detaining the youth for police at Park Boulevard and Acorn Street.
The name of the pedestrian who was killed has not been released.
Sockman said the California Highway Patrol will investigate the accident.
