Rancho Cordova motel burns, again

Sacramento Metropolitan Fire Department officials say that earlier fire damage to the Value Inn in Rancho Cordova was so extensive it was hard to tell whether Monday afternoon's fire actually resulted in any new damage to the troubled structure.

The fire, at 1:33 p.m., was the fifth fire at the 10271 Folsom Blvd. building in the last two years, said Michelle Eidam, a firefighter paramedic with the department.

There were no injuries as a result of the one-alarm fire at the building officially deemed inhabitable, but believed to be home to a number of squatters, Eidam said.

The city has been trying over the last two years to get the building demolished, said Rancho Cordova Vice Mayor Linda Budge. The location at the corner of Folsom and Mather Field and its proximity to transit makes it a site with "unlimited opportunity," she said.
