A Sacramento police officer on a domestic violence call this morning, cornered by an aggressive pit bull, shot and wounded the animal, police spokeswoman Officer Michele Gigante said today.
Gigante said two officers responded to the domestic violence call shortly before 7 a.m. in the 1200 block of Grand Avenue in Del Paso Heights and were told that the man in the dispute had left the area.
The woman allowed the officers to walk into the house to be sure that the man was not hiding inside and that the woman was safe.
But when they officers went inside, Gigante said, two pit bulls came running down the hall toward them. The officers backed out of the house, but the dogs followed them.
Gigante said one of the dogs cornered and tried to attack one of the officers, who then shot the animal in the shoulder area. The officer was not injured.
The pit bull was turned over to officials for Sacramento City Animal Control.
