Shooter admits to manslaughter in 2010 Rancho Cordova killing

A man who shot and killed a woman's ex-boyfriend pleaded no contest Monday to voluntary manslaughter charges in Sacramento Superior Court.

Isaac Merciful Martinez, 21, entered the plea in the July 10, 2010, shooting death of Damien Burkholder in the 3000 block of Laurelhurst Drive in Rancho Cordova.

Martinez entered the plea after testimony had begun in his murder trial in front of Judge Michael P. Kenny.

Besides the voluntary manslaughter, Martinez admitted to gang and gun enhancements that will are expected to extend his total sentence under the plea arrangement to 31 years. Kenny scheduled Martinez' sentencing for Oct. 19.

According to court testimony, Martinez was in his car making out with a woman when Burkholder, her ex-boyfriend, showed up and a fight ensued.
