Suspicious fire burns vacant Citrus Heights home

Officials are investigating a suspicious fire that erupted this morning at a vacant house in Citrus Heights, the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District said.

Firefighters responded just before 8 a.m. to heavy smoke and flames pouring from a home at 6921 Birchwood Circle, according to a news statement. Crews discovered the house was vacant and extinguished the fire, which burned into the attic and attached garage.

Investigators said frequent squatters were reported at the house. One witness described a man in his 30s with a beard leaving the scene on a bike and pulling a trailer just before the fire was reported.

Anyone with information about the case is urged to call the Metro Fire arson tip line at (916) 859-3775.
