A woman died this morning in a head-on collision on Highway 49 in Placer County.
The crash occurred about 8:15 a.m. south of Cramer Road near Meadow Vista. The woman was driving a 2003 green Subaru Outback station wagon northbound on Highway 49 when, witnesses said, she appeared to lose control of the vehicle. The vehicle began to whip back and forth, crossed the center divider lane and traveled into the southbound lanes and oncoming traffic, according to a California Highway Patrol news release.
The Subaru collided head-on with a 99 Freightliner truck traveling in the opposite direction and driven by a 59-year-old Grass Valley man.
The collision caused the Subaru to catch fire. Authorities said passers-by pulled the driver of the Subaru out of the vehicle. She was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel. Her name has not been released pending notification of family.
The driver of the truck was transported to Sutter Roseville Medical Center with major injuries.
CHP officials said alcohol did not appear to have been a factor in the collision.
The roadway was partially blocked for about an hour during investigation of the crash.
