QUESTION: A friend of mine was murdered in Sacramento in 1985, named Gary Wells. Was his murderer ever caught and what happened to him? I believe his name was Dwayne Richardson. What actually happened that night?

ANSWER: Dwayne Michael Richardson pleaded guilty in the 1984 shooting death of 19-year-old Gary Wells.
According to stories in The Bee, Wells' body was found on the sidewalk along the side of his parents' house on Terrier Way in the Lincoln Village area the night of May 23, 1984.
Sheriff's deputies said a witness reported seeing two men arguing at Cirrus Way and Jupiter Drive, about a block from where Wells' body was found. One of the men was in a late model Chevrolet and the other was standing next to the car.
At one point, the witness said, the man in the car got out, pointed a weapon at the other man and fired several times before driving away.
Richardson, who was 18 at the time of the shooting, agreed to a second-degree murder plea with the understanding that he would be allowed to serve his term in the custody of the California Youth Authority.
