ANSWER: Shajia Ayobi is in Sacramento County Jail accused of murder in the shooting death of her husband last December.
According to Sacramento Superior Court online records, her trial is scheduled for Dec. 3.
Shortly after midnight Dec. 18, Ayobi called 911 from Interstate 80 near Norwood Avenue to report that her husband, 53-year-old Ghulam Ayobi -- an Afghan war veteran who helped the U.S. Army prepare troops headed to Afghanistan -- had been shot during a carjacking. Officers found Ghulam Ayobi with a fatal gunshot wound to the upper body.
According to stories in The Bee, Shajia Ayobi told relatives that she and her husband were leaving a friend's house in Natomas' Gateway West neighborhood. When Ghulam Ayobi sat down in the passenger seat of the couple's minivan, he apparently became aware of two people hiding in the back seat.
He reportedly told his wife to get in the van and not to look in the back seat.
Shajia Ayobi said her husband attempted to hand over his wallet as they drove east on Interstate 80, and he was shot by the carjackers during a struggle. The carjackers, she said, then ordered her to pull over and fled.
Shajia Ayobi was arrested about a month later. Police said her statements in a follow-up interview didn't add up.
