QUESTION: What happened to Sylvester Griffin, the man who killed an elderly woman in her home?
Submitted by: Anthony, Modesto
ANSWER: Sylvester Griffin was sentenced in May to life in prison without possibility of parole for the rape and asphyxiation murder of 64-year-old Alice Lynn Murphy.
According to stories in The Bee, Murphy was a longtime real estate agent who lived and worked in the Orangevale and Folsom areas. A friend found Murphy's body in the victim's apartment at a senior-living complex in Folsom the morning of Dec. 21, 2009.
Griffin worked for a medical transport company and had a client in the complex where Murphy lived. His criminal record showed he had past convictions for grand theft, bank robbery and possession of crack cocaine.
In addition to rape and murder, the Sacramento County jury convicted Griffin of burglary. The prosecutor said Griffin was in deep financial trouble about the time of Murphy's murder.
Griffin, 44, is in High Desert State Prison in Susanville.
