Bella Vista High student reportedly injured in accidental shooting on way to school

A Bella Vista High School student accidentally shot himself in the leg this morning while en route to school with a gun, according to the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department.

The Sheriff's Department received a call from the high school, at 8301 Madison Ave. in Fair Oaks, shortly before 9 a.m., reporting that a 16-year-old male student had brought a loaded gun to the campus. Staff members detained the student until law enforcement officers arrived.

Sheriff's officials said the incident was handled by a Safe Schools deputy, working under contract with the San Juan Unified School District.

An investigation revealed that the student accidentally shot himself on his way to school and suffered a non-life-threatening injury, according to a Sheriff's Department news release.

The deputy recovered the gun and cited the student for a felony. The student was released to the custody of his father so the father could seek medical attention for the youth.

Sheriff's officials said it has not been determined how the student acquired the gun.
