The highest-ranking female California Highway Patrol officer has been honored for her pioneering work in law enforcement.
CHP Assistant Commissioner Ramona Prieto was recently presented with the Trailblazer Award by the California Peace Officers' Association. She received the award for her professional accomplishments and for enhancing the stature of women in law enforcement.
Prieto is a 36-year CHP veteran. She was the first female motorcycle officer, riding on patrol for five years in Los Angeles.
"When I joined the highway patrol there were 50 women total, and I knew them all by first name," Prieto stated in a CHP press release. "Now there are over 400."
Prieto, appointed the first female CHP assistant commissioner in 2008, oversees all field and patrol operations from CHP headquarters in Sacramento.
She said her career goal has been to make it easier for others to succeed in the future. Prieto also said that being a mother of five daughters motivates her to pave the way for other women.
