Pedestrian on I-5 downtown hit by 3 vehicles

A man died after being struck by three vehicles on northbound Interstate 5 downtown early this morning.

The California Highway Patrol first received a call at 4:18 a.m. of a man walking on the freeway between the J Street and Richards Boulevard off ramps. Moments later, dispatchers received a second call that at least one vehicle had hit the man.

A CHP press release said the man walked directly into the path of a Toyota. The man's body was then hit by a Honda and then a final time by another vehicle.

The first two drivers stopped, but the third vehicle fled the scene, according to the CHP.

The 49-year-old dead man's name and city of residence have not been released.
