Police urge caution after woman assaulted in downtown Davis

Davis police are reminding people to take precautions after a woman was sexually assaulted while walking in the city's downtown area late Thursday.

The woman was walking in the area of Fourth and J streets about 11:50 p.m. when she was grabbed from behind by a male and sexually assaulted, according to a Police Department news release. The assailant was last seen running eastbound on Fourth Street.

So far, police said, no description of the assailant has been provided. They ask anyone who was in the area and may have seen a suspicious person to call the Davis Police Department at (530) 747-5400.

Police remind people to:

* Always be aware of their surroundings.

* Walk confidently or with a purpose.

* Try to stay in well-lighted, well-populated areas.

* Travel with another person.
