Roseville painting outdoor plumbing devices green

The City of Roseville is asking local businesses to join in painting certain oft-stolen brass plumbing devices a shade of green.

The city's utility department is painting city-owned backflow prevention devices green in hopes that they can easily be identified as coming from Roseville. The brass backflow valves, installed as part of fresh water systems, are taken by thieves who sell them for scrap.

When thieves cut them from piping, water service is interrupted and repairs are costly, according to a Roseville police e-newsletter.

"Our goal is to clearly mark these devices coming from Roseville so that if they are found in the possession of a suspected thief or at a scrap yard, we'll be able to more easily identify them as stolen property," the newsletter stated.

The city is also encouraging private businesses to paint their backflow devices "Roseville green."
