Chair-wielding witness helps thwart Florin Road bank robbery, authorities say

A man who attempted to rob a Florin Road bank this morning was chased off by witnesses, one of whom assaulted the suspect with a chair, authorities say.

The man, identified as Devone Brandon Brown, 23, was arrested by Sacramento County sheriff's deputies, Sgt. Jason Ramos said.

Deputies were called to the bank at 4450 Florin Road just after 10:45 a.m. when a caller reported that people were running from the bank, yelling that it was being robbed, Ramos said.

Investigators learned that the suspect came into the bank, grabbed and held a knife to a bank employee, demanding money, Ramos said.

About two dozen people were inside the bank at the time, and at least one of them assaulted the robbery suspect with a chair, Ramos said. The suspect ran from the bank without any money, removing his clothes as he ran.

Brown was booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail on suspicion of attempted robbery and assault with a deadly weapon, jail booking records show. He is being held in lieu of $150,000.
