A South Lake Tahoe man was being held on $1 million bail after he was arrested in connection with a trailer fire last night.
Firefighters responded to the fire at the trailer park on James Avenue in South Lake Tahoe about 11:20 p.m. Thursday. As firefighters extinguished the flames in one trailer, police officers evacuated neighboring units.
A resident of the burning trailer stated she was awakened by heavy smoke and was able to exit before the fire spread to the front door. She told police she didn't know if her roommate, Eric Almdale, was able to save himself.
A search of the trailer after the fire was out revealed that nobody was inside. And shortly after that, police dispatchers heard from Almdale.
Police said Almdale told dispatchers he wanted to turn himself in for setting the blaze. He allegedly told officers that he started the fire because "he was distraught over family matters and matters concerning the owner of the trailer," stated a police press release.
Almdale was arrested on suspicion of aggravated arson and burglary.
