Update: Man killed in Folsom crash had been designated driver

Two men are dead after a BMW SUV crashed head-on into a Honda compact car on the Folsom Lake Crossing shortly after midnight today, police said.

Folsom Police arrived at 12:28 a.m. to find a burning BMW and a totaled Honda, according to police spokesman Sgt. Jason Browning. He said the BMW was traveling at "extremely excessive speeds," when it crossed the double yellow lines and hit the Honda compact. Both drivers died instantly.

Police have identified the Honda driver, but the BMW driver has not yet been identified since his body was badly burned. There were no other people inside the vehicles.

The Honda driver's wife told police Saturday morning that her husband was in Folsom because he was the designated driver and had just finished dropping off his friends, Browning said.

Police are still investigating whether alcohol or drugs were a factor. The crash closed Folsom Lake Crossing for over eight hours, before it was re-opened shortly before 9 a.m. today.
