Citrus Heights police have identified the woman arrested in connection with this morning's crash that severely injured two young school children as 52-year-old Tresa Bales-Sterba of Orangevale.

Bales.Sterba_Teresa.jpgShe was booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail on suspicion of felony driving under the influence of alcohol or a controlled substance. Police said she remained on the scene and was cooperative.

Police spokesman Chad Morris said the woman had been westbound on Greenback Lane when she hit another car, went into a spin and struck the two children.

The two students who suffered major injuries are siblings in first and third grades at Skycrest Elementary school.

The crash that injured the brothers occurred about 8 a.m. at Greenback Lane and Mariposa Avenue.

"We have our support folks standing by at the school, ready to assist as needed, " said Roger Stock, a San Juan Unified School District spokesman.

Another district spokesman said early reports indicated that the children were in a crosswalk when they were hit by the vehicle.

One boy was transported to UC Davis Medical Center and the other to Mercy San Juan Hospital. The boys' family has been contacted and the support group is at Skycrest to help any children.

Skycrest Elementary is located at 5641 Mariposa Ave, about a half mile from Greenback Lane.

Police said that both directions of Greenback Lane were closed between San Juan Avenue and Birdcage Street.
