Sacramento police seek the public's help in determining how a young man ended up dead in Del Paso Heights on Tuesday night.
Police spokeswoman Officer Michele Gigante said the victim, identified today as 19-year-old Michael Burdan, appears to be an "innocent victim" who was shot while riding his bicycle from the home of one relative to another.
Detectives are trying to unravel specifics about the shooting, which occurred at North Avenue and May Street about 6:45 p.m., and want help in the case, Gigante said.
"They're working it hard," she said of detectives. "It's sad when something like this happens. It's tragic."
Police and paramedics responded to the scene after callers reported hearing gunfire and a person down in the street. Burdan's body was found in the road, where he died.
Investigators have identified no suspects or motive.
Burdan's Facebook page shows he graduated from Foothills High School. In his biographical information, he wrote that he loved school, his family and his girlfriend.
Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call police at (916) 264-5471 or Crime Alert at (916) 443-4357. Crime Alert tipsters may remain anonymous and could be eligible for a reward up to $1,000.
