Family of victim killed by Sacramento Regional Transit bus awarded $2.4 million

A Sacramento Superior Court jury today awarded more than $2.4 million to the husband and son of a woman who was struck and killed by a Sacramento Regional Transit bus nearly five years ago.

The verdict came down to whether Joyce Ann Jacobs was in the crosswalk when she was hit by the bus the evening of Jan. 9, 2008, at the corner of Q and 8th streets in downtown Sacramento.

Jurors found that she was, and then awarded her husband, John, $381,789.11 for economic damages and $2 million more in non-economic damages. The panel gave her son, Anthony, another $30,000 in non-economic damages for a total award of $2,411,789.11.

"I'm just so glad that it turned out, it was proven that Joyce was in the crosswalk," said her husband, John Jacobs, a pastor with the New Ministries Worship Center.
