A man found dead this afternoon in a vehicle off Highway 20 in Nevada County is believed to be an airman who had been reported missing from Beale Air Force Base.
The vehicle was found near Mooney Flat Road in Nevada County, about a mile east of the Yuba County line.
California Highway Patrol spokesman Officer Marc Morrison said the CHP received a report about 3:30 p.m. from a California Department of Transportation employee who was working in the area and spotted the vehicle. The employee found a man inside and reported that he appeared to have been dead for at least a day.
Morrison said CHP officers, Nevada County sheriff's deputies and emergency medical personnel responded and confirmed the death.
Beale Air Force Base issued a news release reporting that an airman who had been missing since Tuesday evening was found dead in his vehicle this afternoon off Highway 20 between Smartsville and Penn Valley. His name has not been released pending notification of family.
Beale spokesman Tech. Sgt. Eric Petoski said a joint search party from the Air Force Office of Special Investigations, the Nevada County Sheriff's Department and the California Highway Patrol had been searching for the airman.
