Elk Grove police are investigating an attempted sexual assault that occurred late Sunday afternoon in the parking lot of the softball complex at Elk Grove Regional Park.
Police said the incident occurred about 6:05 p.m. A 37-year-old woman was leaning into the back of her parked vehicle when a man she did not know attacked her from behind and tried to sexually assault her. The woman was able to fend him off by pushing and punching him several times in the body and face, according to a Police Department news release.
The man fled and was last seen running north through the park.
The man was described as white or Latino, 30 to 40 years old, 5 feet 9 inches tall, weighing about 165 pounds, with short, dark messy hair, and a "5 o'clock shadow." He reportedly was wearing a black sweatshirt.
Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to call the Elk Grove Police Department Detective Bureau at (916) 478-8060, or Crime Alert at (916) 443-4357. Callers to Crime Alert can remain anonymous and may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000.
