Preliminary findings show nothing criminal in South Area fire death

A preliminary investigation failed to find anything criminal in the death of a woman whose body was found in a burned South Sacramento County duplex on Thursday.

Pending a coroner's autopsy and a fire department investigation, there was no "criminality" involved said Sgt. Jason Ramos with the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department.

Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District firefighters were called to the duplex in the 5400 block of Sky Parkway about 2 p.m. Thursday. A citizen reported that flames were coming from one unit in the duplex.

When crews arrived they found one bedroom well-involved in fire. Firefighters attacked the blaze and extinguished the fire.

Once inside the bedroom, they found the dead woman. She has not been identified.

The sheriff's department sent a homicide detective and crime scene investigators to the fire as a precaution. They surveyed the scene with fire investigators.

It appears, pending any coroner or fire department findings, that the fire was accidental, said Ramos.
