Three convicted in Cordova robbery-murder of casino winner

A Sacramento Superior Court jury today convicted three men of robbery and murder in the Dec. 29, 2008, shooting death of a man who prosecutors say was targeted for the $16,000 he won gambling at an Indian casino.

The verdicts came in against Derrick Dwayne Sam, 34, Shannon Shorter, 36, and Genneledward Miles Jr., 30, for the murder, robbery, abduction and torture of Timothy Lance Brodie, 30. Prosecutors said Brodie was shot and killed in the parking lot of a Rancho Cordova apartment complex when he tried to escape after he had been abducted and beaten in an effort to force him to disclose where he hid his winnings.

Sentencing for Miles has been scheduled for Dec. 21 in front of Judge Maryanne G. Gilliard. Sam and Shorter are slated to be sentenced by Gilliard on Jan. 11.
