Two people injured in Foothill Farms apartment complex fire

Two people were transported to an area hospital with injuries suffered during a two-alarm fire tonight that damaged eight apartment units in the Foothill Farms area.

Firefighter Michelle Eidam, spokeswoman for the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District, said crews were called to the apartment complex at 5101 Hackberry Lane, just south of Madison Avenue, at 5:37 p.m.

The fire started in the kitchen of an apartment, where a man was cooking and spread into a breezeway that provides access to four upstairs units.

The man who was cooking was taken to a hospital with injuries. Eidam said she did not know the nature or extent of his injuries. A firefighter also was transported to a hospital suffering from smoke inhalation.

Initially, there was concern that two children were trapped in a downstairs unit, Eidam said. Firefighters immediately searched the apartment and found no one inside. It was later confirmed that the youngsters were out of the unit and safe.

She said a second alarm was quickly issued because of concern that the fire would spread to other units in the complex.

Eidam said firefighters had to break windows to enter the upstairs apartments and fight the fire.

Eidam said fire personnel are working with the apartment managers to determine whether displaced residents can be relocated to other units within the complex. If not, she said, the Red Cross will be called to help find temporary housing.
