A 50-year-old man visiting his nephew was gunned down outside the nephew's home this afternoon in the south Sacramento County community of Herald.
Sacramento County Sheriff's Department spokesman Sgt. Jason Ramos said the victim was shot and killed around 4:30 p.m. in a rural area in the 13000 block of Purvis Road, just east of central Herald and north of the Sacramento-San Joaquin county line.
Ramos said the victim was not an area resident but did make periodic trips to Herald to visit his nephew.
Ramos said the victim went out for a late-afternoon motorbike ride, and the nephew later reported hearing a single gunshot outside his home. The nephew ran out of the house to find his uncle down and unresponsive in the driveway.
Ramos said the victim died from a single bullet wound to the upper body.
The nephew reported the possibility of a vehicle speeding away from the shooting site, and sheriff's officials said they are interviewing people spread throughout the rural area. Ramos noted that the site is remote and borders a gravel road.
The identity of the victim has not yet been released.
